Amsterdam-based coatings giant AkzoNobel announced last week that it has taken another step toward its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

According to AkzoNobel, it has signed an agreement with energy company Eneco, which will allow all of its paint and coatings production in the Netherlands to be powered by green energy.

The Amsterdam-based coatings giant announced earlier this week that it has signed an agreement with energy company Eneco, which will allow all of its paint and coatings production in the Netherlands to be powered by green energy.

“This is an important agreement which secures the supply of sustainably generated electricity for some of our less energy intensive locations,” said Marcel Galjee, Director of Energy at AkzoNobel.

“It signals the next step in further reducing our C02 emissions and demonstrates our commitment to resource efficiency, which was highlighted by the company’s recent number one ranking on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.”

The agreement, which runs until 2020, will provide electricity generated by wind power to the company’s facilities in Sassenheim, Wapenveld, Grot Ammers and Ammerzoden, and involves a supply of 66GWH a year, which is the equivalent of the energy consumed by a city with 33,000 inhabitants, according to the company.

This will also enable AkzoNobel to reduce its annual carbon emissions by 19 kilotons.

“We are proud to be supplying green energy to all of AkzoNobel’s paint facilities in the Netherlands,” said Bram Poeth, Managing Director Eneco Business.

“It builds on the agreement we already have in place to provide bio-steam at AkzoNobel in Delfzijl and creates an even stronger partnership as we work together towards a more sustainable the Netherlands.”

This contract follows two agreements announced last year that involve the purchasing of wind energy directly from wind farms under construction. The company also uses sustainably generated steam in two of its sites.

AkzoNobel’s energy consumption is now 40 percent renewable.
