German specialty chemicals company Evonik (Essen) opened a new plant in Shanghai, China, earlier this month.

The new facility will produce a wide range of organically modified specialty silicones used in polyurethanes, paints and coatings and a variety of industrial applications, the company notes.

The new facility will produce a wide range of organically modified specialty silicones used in polyurethanes, paints and coatings and a variety of industrial applications, the company notes.

“The plant is yet another important cornerstone in Evonik’s growth strategy,” said Christian Kullman, Chairman of Evonik’s Executive Board. “We’re focusing on businesses with a clear orientation toward specialty chemicals and on powerful innovations to significantly increase the value of the company.”

Important Market

China and its neighboring countries are a key specialty additives market for Evonik, and the company says that the new plant simplifies its supply chain.

“Demand for specialty silicones has grown strongly over the past few years,” Kullman said. “China and its neighboring countries are key markets for many applications.

"Thanks to the new plant, we will now be able to support our customers in the Asia region with even more speed and flexibility. At the same time, we’ll be consolidating our position as the global market and technology leader for organically modified specialty silicones.”

While the budget for the new plant was not released, the company said it invested “a high two-digit million euro sum” in the construction of the new facility, which took about a year and employed 700 people.
