The focus will be on failure—and preventing it—during a free webinar on Wednesday, Aug. 16, on, part of the 2017 SSPC-JPCL Webinar Education Series.

Coating Defects and Failures,” presented by Sarah Olthof, of Greenman-Pedersen Inc., will explore the service life of protective coatings, and the factors that might cause a coating system to fail prematurely. Olthof will discuss coating systems in terms of “time to failure,” noting that while every coating system will fail eventually, problems arise when a system fails before its expected service life has been reached.

The free webinar Aug. 16 will explore the service life of protective coatings, and the factors that might cause a coating system to fail prematurely.

Olthof will look at factors like improper surface preparation, improper application, improper coating selection, improper coating formulation, poor quality raw materials and even the design of the structure itself, all of which can play into a premature coating failure.

The goal of the webinar is to familiarize attendees with types of coating defects and failures, why they might come about and how to best avoid them.

About the Presenter

Olthof, an active member of SSPC, ASTM, the Bolt Council and NACE, is laboratory manager for GPI, and is responsible for all lab operations there, including supervision of the quality program, test method implementation and project oversight. She has 20 years of experience in testing work including analytical chemistry, forensic analysis, physical testing and accelerated weathering for protective coatings and related samples.

The webinar, which runs from 11 a.m. to noon ET, Aug. 16, is sponsored by Chlor Rid. Attendees are eligible for SSPC credit.
