In North Dakota, a runway painter was struck by a vehicle and killed, and the accident is still under investigation a week later.

Darry Arveson Jr., 48, was in a vehicle, painting lines on the runway at Hector International Airport in Fargo, North Dakota, in the early hours of the morning. According to international airport authority executive director Shawn Dobberstein, another vehicle driven by an airport employee struck the painter’s rig.

The Accident

The employee driving the SUV that hit Arveson was later identified as the airport’s assistant director, Darren Anderson, who has been with the Fargo Airport Authority since 1997.

Dobberstein noted that a lot of airport maintenance, especially on runways, was done at night. “The airport was still open except the primary runway was closed for this operation,” he added.

At the time of the accident, the painter was on the runway to remove pavement markings and re-paint the necessary markings. It was routine night maintenance, with both vehicles authorized to be on the field.

The collision was reported to emergency dispatchers around 12:40 a.m. on Monday (July 31). Arveson was declared dead at the scene.

Anderson and his passenger were not injured.

Moving Forward

While no one has been cited, according to the Pioneer Press, the accident is still under investigation by Fargo police. The case will be referred to Cass County State Attorney’s Office to review any changes, Deputy Chief Joe Anderson told the Pioneer Press.

“We’re going to look at what caused the crash and any charges that could be recommended. At this point, the [airport] employee has been very cooperative with law enforcement,” Anderson said.
