A number of manufacturers and suppliers have recently introduced new products to help with specific aspects of surface preparation work. The list below details just a few new offerings on the market, from blasting media to laser equipment.

Stainless Steel Grit

Abrasive media manufacturer Transmet Corporation (Columbus, Ohio) recently added stainless steel grit to its abrasive offerings. According to Transmet, the stainless steel grit is durable and resistant to breakdown, leading to increased visibility for the operator during blasting. The media can be used for coating removal, surface preparation and surface profile creation prior to painting, cleaning of welded joints and other similar jobs.

Mobile Pre-Separator

Blastrac Europe (Nieuwegein, Netherlands) unveiled a new mobile pre-separator for dust collection this spring. The cyclonic pre-separator, model E12278, captures 80 to 90 percent of dust entering a dust collector, leading to extended life for filters, the company says.

The unit comes with a “big bag” for collection, and can be put into a “low” position for transport before being raised for operation.

Vapor Abrasive Blasting Unit

Earlier this year, Minneapolis-based Graco unveiled the latest product in its line of vapor abrasive blast equipment. The EcoQuip 2 EQ features a portable cart with lift handles, weighs 220 pounds empty and retails for $11,000. Its design allows crews to complete smaller jobs without the time-consuming process of transporting a larger unit to a worksite, according to the company.

Water Cleaning/Surface Preparation Unit

Equipment manufacturer Unimanix (Dorval, Quebec) recently announced its latest high-pressure water cleaning and surface preparation solution, the UNI 7060, designed specifically for overcoat projects.

The system is adjustable up to 7,000 psi and six gallons of water per minute to remove paint and rust. Users can add a soluble salt remover via a built-in additive storage and injection system. The system also has integrated abrasive blasting capabilities for black oxide removal, and an automated low water level shut-off to prevent breakdown from unexpected water disruptions.

Laser Cleaning Unit

Laser-based material processing firm Fonon Corporation (Orlando, Florida) recently unveiled a multifaceted product developed for surface preparation and cleaning, as well as paint removal.
