The West Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking contractors for the cleaning and coating of the Phil G. McDonald Memorial Bridge, located in Raleigh County, West Virginia.

Bids are due May 16.

Scope of Work

The project involves cleaning and recoating the existing 700-foot-high Phil G. McDonald Memorial Bridge, spanning 784 feet over Glade Creek. The structure opened July 15, 1988 at a cost of $29 million and is one of the highest truss bridges in the world. It is the highest bridge in the U.S. Interstate Highway System.

The contractor will apply a four-coat organic zinc-rich system to existing steel surfaces using products by an owner-approved manufacturer, which include Ameron (PPG), Carboline, International Paint, Sherwin-Williams, and Wasser.

All box truss members and steel bent members will receive a shop coating only, while areas enclosed by sealed diaphragms will not require coating.

Concrete piers 2 and 3 will receive 100,000 gross square feet of breathable concrete protective coating. Owner-approved manufacturers for the concrete coating include Poly-Carb Inc., Sherwin-Williams, Tamms Industries, Textured Coatings of America, and Klass Coatings.

Existing coatings contain lead and will require containment according to Class 2A for environmental protection.
