In step with the airline’s 80th year and Canada’s 150th anniversary year, Air Canada unveiled its new livery on Thursday (Feb. 9) at three simultaneous events held in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

The design of black lettering and cockpit window mask, accented only by the classic red maple leaf rondelle, is a nod to the airline’s previous designs as the red symbol returns to the tail after a 24-year absence, according to an Air Canada news release.

The design of black lettering and cockpit window mask, accented only by the classic red maple leaf rondelle, is a nod to the airline’s previous designs as the red symbol returns to the tail after a 24-year absence.

The look was designed by international design firm Winkreative, which is headed by Canadian entrepreneur Tyler Brule.

Three aircraft — a Boeing 787-7 and two Airbus A321s — were painted with the new livery in secrecy at Dean Baldwin Painting at Brissom Air Force Base in Peru, Indiana, according to Skies Magazine. They entered service immediately following the unveiling. The rest of the 300-piece fleet will be repainted with the new design.

“Air Canada’s new livery signals a pivotal inflection point in our 80-year history,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada President of Passenger Airlines, at the event in Toronto, where the airline’s largest hub is located. “The future Air Canada represents the strength of our nation and the future-looking spirit of our airline.”
