Ensuring that the new generation of waterborne direct-to-metal coatings performs as required will be the focus of a free upcoming webinar by SSPC and JPCL.

"Overcoming Performance Challenges with Waterborne DTM Coatings," to be held from 11 a.m. to noon ET (4 to 5 p.m. CET) Aug. 20, will discuss the formulation challenges of these new coatings.

About DTM Coatings

Direct-to-metal (DTM) coatings provide advantages over multilayer systems by reducing the number of application steps, lowering raw material costs and the need for active pigments, experts say. Waterborne resins used in anticorrosion coatings have improved dramatically in recent years, and new development is continuing to improve resin performance at reduced VOC.

Formulating waterborne DTM coatings for optimal performance presents challenges.

Because the corrosion protection provided by these coatings is highly dependent on both the resin and the formulation of the coating, choosing the appropriate solvents, additives and pigments is necessary to optimize the coating's performance.

Attempting to drop in or directly replace resins in waterborne formulations does not always result in optimum performance. Therefore, developing these coatings presents many challenges to the formulator.

Participants may register here free.

The webinar is sponsored by BASF.

About the Presenter

Webinar presenter Lori Boggs, Technical Team Leader at BASF, has over 25 years of experience at BASF in automotive and industrial coatings and has spent much of her career observing the spray application of automotive topcoats to determine what rheological measurements can be related to the final color and appearance of the film.

Boggs has a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, where she studied the mechanism of rheology control of coatings containing microgels.

Registration, CEU Credits

This webinar is part of the JPCL/SSPC Webinar Education Series, which provides continuing education for SSPC recertifications and technology updates on important topics.

An archived webcast on "Epoxy & Vinyl Ester Tank Linings," presented in June, is now available free on PaintSquare.

SSPC is an accredited training provider for the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE), and Professional Engineers in Florida may submit SSPC Webinar Continuing Education Units to the board. To do so, applicants must download the FBPE CEU form and pass the Webinar Exam, which costs $25.

Free Webcasts Available

Numerous free webcasts in the JPCL/SSPC Education Series, covering a wide range of topics, are now available at www.paintsquare.com/webinars.

Among the recent presentations:

"Access Equipment: Exploring Options For Working Safely," presented May 21, discussed factors to consider when seeking access equipment for painting and coating work at heights.

"Safety in Abrasive Blasting," presented April 2, discussed the hazards associated with abrasive blasting and effective safety measures.

"Polyurea Application for Excessively Cracked Concrete," presented Jan. 15, focused on using polyurea liner systems to address concrete problems.

"Lessons Learned in Coating Water & Wastewater Treatment Structures" used case histories to define performance requirements for coatings and linings.

"Polyaspartic Coatings for High-Profile Protective and Marine Applications for Steel and Concrete," presented Dec. 18, discussed situations where polyaspartic coatings offer advantages over other coating technologies.

"Insulation Choice and Its Effect on Performance & Service Life of CUI Systems," presented Nov. 13, covered how specifiers can select CUI prevention systems that work well together in their particular corrosion environment.

"Steps to More Effective Power Tool Cleaning," presented Nov. 6, focused on power tool cleaning and how to effectively remove corrosion, mill scale and coatings.

"Lessons Learned in Coating Water & Wastewater Treatment Structures," presented Oct. 16, used case histories to define performance requirements for coatings and linings used on concrete substrates at wastewater treatment facilities.

Will this webinar on DTM coatings be added to the PaintSquare webinar archive?

Comment from Amy Woodall, (8/27/2015, 9:51 AM)

Hi Robert, we plan to add this to our Pro Video Learning Series in early 2016.
