Ensuring that the new generation of waterborne direct-to-metal coatings performs as required will be the focus of a free upcoming webinar by SSPC and JPCL.

"Overcoming Performance Challenges with Waterborne DTM Coatings," to be held from 11 a.m. to noon ET (4 to 5 p.m. CET) Aug. 20, will discuss the formulation challenges of these new coatings.

About DTM Coatings

Direct-to-metal (DTM) coatings provide advantages over multilayer systems by reducing the number of application steps, lowering raw material costs and the need for active pigments, experts say. Waterborne resins used in anticorrosion coatings have improved dramatically in recent years, and new development is continuing to improve resin performance at reduced VOC.

DTM coating

Formulating waterborne DTM coatings for optimal performance presents challenges.

Because the corrosion protection provided by these coatings is highly dependent on both the resin and the formulation of the coating, choosing the appropriate solvents, additives and pigments is necessary to optimize the coating's performance.

Attempting to drop in or directly replace resins in waterborne formulations does not always result in optimum performance. Therefore, developing these coatings presents many challenges to the formulator.

The webinar is sponsored by BASF.

About the Presenter

Webinar presenter Lori Boggs, Technical Team Leader at BASF, has over 25 years of experience at BASF in automotive and industrial coatings and has spent much of her career observing the spray application of automotive topcoats to determine what rheological measurements can be related to the final color and appearance of the film.

Boggs has a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, where she studied the mechanism of rheology control of coatings containing microgels.

Registration, CEU Credits

This webinar is part of the JPCL/SSPC Webinar Education Series, which provides continuing education for SSPC recertifications and technology updates on important topics.
