The long-struggling Western European paint and coatings market should hold its ground in the short term, but annual growth will average no more than 2.2 percent for the next five years, according to a new forecast.

The total market for paints and coatings in Western Europe was more than 5.6 million tonnes in 2013 and is forecast to rise to more than 6.2 million tonnes by 2018, according to "A Profile of the West European Paint Industry," from London-based research consultancy IRL.

Other market reports in recent years have noted more robust gains for paints and coatings in Asia-Pacific, Latin America and even North America.

Other coating market forecasts have shown more robust growth in Asia-Pacific and Latin America.

The report provides market data for 2013, forecasts for 2018, and an overview of paint industry trends across 16 countries in the region.

Country Outlooks

On a country-by-country basis, Germany is by far the largest national market, accounting for about one-quarter of total demand.

Ireland, Norway and Finland are the smallest markets in terms of demand, but they are also some of the fastest-growing markets in the region. For example, Norway’s growing oil and gas industry is having a positive impact on coatings demand both domestically as well as in surrounding countries.

Germany is the largest paint and coatings market in Western Europe, but Finland, Ireland and Norway are growing quickly, the report said. Oil and gas exploration is pumping up the protective coatings market.

Architectural and decorative coatings for consumer and professional uses account for about 60% of the total market, although this proportion varies from country to country.

Market by Segment

Growth is forecast to be highest in the architectural and powder coatings segments, led by recovery in the construction market.

Growth in the protective coatings segment should get a boost from developments in the oil and gas sector and from infrastructure investments that had been put on hold during the economic downturn.

Market Segment

Architectural coatings still dominate the Western European market, but powder coatings are getting a boost from their environmentally friendly profile.

The use of powder coatings is also growing quickly, due to technological advances in this sector over the last few years, and to increasing awareness of their environmental credentials.

Trends and Topics

"A Profile of the West European Paint Industry" offers insights into the market changes of the past few years and outlines the key trends affecting the decorative and industrial coatings segments in each country covered.

The study covers Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

It provides 2013 market data on nine paints and coatings segments: architectural/decorative, industrial wood coatings, protective coatings, marine coatings, automotive OEM coatings, automotive refinishes, powder coatings, general industrial coatings and plastic coatings. Forecasts on these are also presented for the year 2018.
