Silver Loses Luster as Rust Buster

Friday, June 20, 2014

Silver may not always be so protective in protective coatings for some steels, researchers in Iran are reporting.

Scientists from the Institute of Color Science and Technology in Tehran have found degraded corrosion protection performance in waterborne polyurethanes containing nanoparticulate silver.

Researchers studied coatings used to protect mild steel like that used for these these bolts, which were not part of the study.

The team applied waterborne polyurethane (WPU) and high-solid polyurethane (HPU) coatings containing nanoparticulate silver to mild steel. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the silver-laced coatings were compared to similar coatings without nanoparticulate silver in a salt solution

The EIS results showed degradation of the waterborne polyurethane in the presence of nanoparticulate silver.

The same was not true of the high-solid polyurethane, however. There, the inclusion of the nanoparticulate silver "revealed no significant effect on the coating resistance," the team reported.

Both coating types tested contained nanoparticulate silver. The performance of the waterborne polyurethane was affected, while that of its high-solid counterpart was not.

Additional investigation using SEM cross-section also "showed loss of WPU coating integrity in the presence of nanoparticulate silver, while no significant effect was observed for the HPU coating," the team said.

The difference, confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy, was traced to the coatings' differing chemical structures, the scientists said.

Their research, "Effects of nanoparticulate silver on the corrosion protection performance of polyurethane coatings on mild steel in sodium chloride solution," is published in the August 2014 issue of Progress in Organic Coatings.
