Dutch maritime technology company Micanti has introduced an alternative to paint for ship hull antifouling.

Thorn-D is a self-adhesive foil that is applied to the hull of a vessel to act as a physical barrier against marine growth, the company says.

According to the company, the fibers on Thorn-D prevent barnacles and other organisms from attaching to the ship's hull.

The product is made of small fibers that prevent organisms from attaching to the ship's hull.

"The millions of tiny fibers or hairs on the foil are resilient and vibrate constantly by the water movement," Micanti explains on its website. "This combination of prickliness and swaying of the fibers makes the surface unattractive for organisms to settle.

"The nylon fibers are similar to the spiky hairs that organisms have to combat fouling."

Environmentally Friendly

The product was originally used for moored objects like fish farms and has been further developed for the shipping industry and guarantees 100 percent environmental friendliness, according to Micanti.

Thorn-D has a five-year lifespan and does not affect speed or fuel consumption, the company says.

Micanti explains its Thorn-D product in this video.

Thorn-D has been applied to workboats in the Netherlands, Middle East and U.S.

Award-Winning Technology

The Thorn-D technology recently netted Micanti the Dutch Chamber of Commerce's SME Innovation Top 100 award, billed as the most prestigious innovation award in the Netherlands.
