Antifouling Touts Slick Slime Trick

PPG Industries has launched Sigmaglide 1290, a 100 percent silicone-binder system that uses surface regeneration technology to maintain a slime-resistant substrate.

PPG says it has engineered the fouling release silicone binder at the molecular level "to design the optimal configuration for the silicone coating surface."

"This results in an increased silicone density at the surface to such a degree that slime organisms do not recognize it as a surface substrate and have no chance to settle on it," the manufacturer said in a product announcement.

"This significantly extends the effectiveness of the coating."

Dynamic Surface Regeneration

Sigmaglide 1290's "dynamic surface regeneration properties" prevent the coating from losing effectiveness over time.

Water acts as a catalyst to reduce the coating's surface energy "back to its original state and thus restart its beneficial surface configuration properties," according to PPG.

"As a result, customers will experience no loss in performance and improved stability of the product throughout its lifetime."

The product is suitable for tankers, bulkers, gas carriers, dredgers, containerships, cruise ships, ferries and other vessel types as well as FPSOs and slow-steaming vessels.

Fuel Saving

Sigmaglide 1290 is the latest in PPG's long-running Sigmaglide line, which has been used on more than 400 vessels worldwide, the company said.

PPG says Sigmaglide customers have reported fuel savings of 3 to 13 percent.
