The Alabama Department of Transportation is seeking bids for the rehabilitation, cleaning, and recoating of the historic O’Neal Bridge.

The Governor Edward A. O'Neal Bridge is a 2,071 foot-long x 46.6 foot-wide cantilever through truss bridge that connects Florence and Sheffield, AL, over the Tennessee River.

Project Scope

The project involves abrasive blast-cleaning and recoating approximately 505,000 square feet of structural steel on the O’Neal Bridge, a project estimated by the DOT between $7,675,587 and $9,381,273.

Bids are due May 30.

Bids are being sought by the Alabama DOT to clean and recoat 505,000 square feet of structural steel on the O'Neal Bridge.

The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and coated with an inorganic zinc rich primer, an epoxy intermediate and a polyurethane finish.

The existing coatings may contain lead; containment will be required.

The project also includes shop-priming and field-finishing of 9,000 pounds of new structural steel. The steel will be coated with an inorganic zinc-rich primer, an acrylic intermediate and an acrylic finish.

Contractors will also perform the class 2 finishing of 40,000 square feet of concrete surfaces.

About the Structure

Named for Governor Edward A. O’Neal, the bridge was constructed in 1939. Before the O’Neal bridge, the Tennessee River was covered by the Old Railroad Bridge which opened in 1840 and served the Norfolk-Southern Railroad Company while doubling as a toll bridge.

The project cost is estimated between $7,675,587 and $9,381,273.

The O’Neal Bridge initially served as a toll bridge costing 15 cents. When the toll was removed in 1950, the mayors of the tri-cities paid the final toll at midnight.
