Driven by escalating U.S. health and environmental concerns, the global antimicrobial coatings market is expected to surge by nearly 10 percent annually and top $4.5 billion by 2020, a new study forecasts.

Growing demand for medical device coatings is expected to remain a key market driver over the next six years, according to "Antimicrobial Coatings Market Analysis And Segment Forecasts To 2020," just released by San Francisco-based Grand View Research Inc.

Antimicrobial industrial floor systems can kill mold, mildew, fungi, yeast, algae and bacteria.

Market penetration for products that enhance indoor air quality is also expected to grow, mainly in the United States, the report finds.

Antimicrobial coatings are used on a variety of surfaces—from industrial flooring to architectural and medical components—to protect surfaces and humans from parasites, bacteria, germs, fungi and other micro-organisms.

Key Findings and Players

Segmented by product, application and region, the report includes these highlights:

  • Global antimicrobial coating market volume was estimated at 310.3 kilo tons in 2013 and is expected to reach 589.8 kilo tons by 2020, growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 9.8 percent.
  • Surface modification coatings are the leading product segment, accounting for 53.9 percent of total market volume in 2013.
  • Antimicrobial powder coatings will dominate the product segment, growing at a CAGR of 13.2 percent to reach $2.2 billion USD by 2020.

Products that enhance indoor air quality are the leading application market for antimicrobial coatings, according to the report by Global View Research.

  • Indoor air quality is the leading application market for antimicrobial coatings, accounting for 26.9 percent of total volume in 2013. Global antimicrobial coating demand for medical applications is expected to reach 151.6 kilo tons by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 10.2 percent.
  • North America dominated the global market in 2013, accounting for 39 percent of total market volume. The continent is expected to remain both the largest and the fastest-growing market in the years to come, with an estimated CAGR of 10.6 percent from 2014 to 2020. European market revenue is expected to reach $1.0 billion USD by 2020.
  • Meanwhile, "huge untapped potential" lies ahead in Asia Pacific and Latin America, creating "a major opportunity for industry participants in the near future."
  • The market's top four suppliers are AkzoNobel NV, Sherwin-Williams, Dow Microbial Control and Diamond Vogel, which together controlled more than 40 percent of global demand in 2013.

Challenges Ahead

Raw materials and regulations will remain the sector's biggest challenges.

AST Products Inc.

Antimicrobial products like AST Products' RepelaCOAT, for medical devices, will remain a booming market.

Stringent regulatory scenarios are likely to continue in Europe and the U.S., due to increasing health concerns over the use of silver in the coatings and the issues and costs associated with product registration.

In addition, volatile prices of silver and other raw materials are also expected to dampen profitability, the report found.
