Dow Coating Materials has announced a new “safe touch” acrylic resin with low thermal conductivity for industrial infrastructure prone to unintended heat transfer.

Spray-applied Maincote IC Acrylic Resins are designed to address the heat transfer from pipes, valves, levers and other infrastructure and components that threatens worker safety, hampers equipment maintenance, and defeats energy efficiency.

Coatings formulated with Dow's Maincote IC Acrylic Resins are designed to provide safe touch at elevated temperatures.

Thermal insulation coatings formulated with the resins can replace the thick mechanical insulation that can be costly and difficult to apply over complex geometries, according to Dow. Traditional insulation can also mask the problem of corrosion under insulation (CUI), the company notes.

Use at Elevated Temperatures

Waterborne thermal insulation coating formulations with the resins have safe-touch properties at elevated temperatures and can maintain target temperatures with "notably lower energy usage versus without a coating," according to Mary Rose Correa, Dow's North America industrial field marketing manager.

"The acrylic backbone offers water barrier protection and thinner film coating facilities improved detection of corrosion, because it is easier to inspect the metal surfaces," says Leo Procopio, technical service group leader.

Coatings formulated with the resins can applied with airless spray equipment and, when applied at the proper film thickness, can decrease surface temperature, even when the substrate is at a higher temperature, Dow says.

Dow introduced Maincote at the 2014 American Coatings Show, which took place April 8-10 in Atlanta, GA.
