Turbine Coating Made to Fight Ice

Global wind energy provider Gamesa has introduced a new protective coating designed to prevent icing and withstand wear on turbine blades.

Bladeshield consists of an anti-icing "paint" that "not only prevents the formation of ice but also boosts the paint's resistance to erosion," according to an announcement by the Spanish company.

The nanotech system's formulation "improves, even doubles, the paint's anti-erosion and durability properties," Gamesa says.

Bladeshield, Gamesa's first anti-icing coating for wind turbine blades, is designed for long wear.

Bladeshield is the company's first anti-icing coating. It will be used on Gamesa's turbines but is also available for other manufacturers' products, the company said without elaboration.

Development

Bladeshield was developed during the four-year, $42 million research partnership known as the Azimut Project, an initiative by 11 European companies and 22 research centers to develop the world's most powerful wind turbine by 2020.

During the project, Gamesa also developed a new resin material for turbine blades and a laboratory-scale prototype of a corrosion monitoring system for offshore environments and coating wear.

Founded in 1976 as Grupo Auxiliar Metalúrgico, Gamesa initially focused on the construction and sale of industrial machinery and equipment. Today, the multinational focuses on renewable energy and aeronautics.
