Measuring ambient conditions—one of the most important steps before final surface preparation and coating application—is the focus of a new installment in the  PaintSquare Video Learning Center series.

Measuring Ambient Conditions is one of 19 videos in an original instructional series that will delve into multiple aspects of protective coatings work.

"Measuring Ambient Conditions," part of the new PaintSquare Video Learning Center series, covers the conditions that should be measured for an industrial painting project.

Created and narrated by experts at KTA-Tator Inc., the series of short video segments will cover a wide range of topics, from quality-control and health and safety issues to basics on the proper use of coatings instruments. Each video is designed to be concise and easy to understand.

Determining Conditions

In this video (4:00), KTA's William Corbett discusses the conditions that are typically measured on an industrial painting project and the tools to measure them.

"You should not rely on prevailing conditions from a local weather service or from the Internet," Corbett advises.

He also notes that inside conditions need to be assessed for work performed inside a containment structure.

Ambient Conditions

Remember to measure ambient conditions inside a containment area, Corbett says.

Industry documents that may be useful include ASTM E 337 Standard Test Method for Measuring Humidity with a Psychrometer and an SSPC Guide for Monitoring and Controlling Ambient Conditions During Coating Operations, Corbett says.

Future Topics

PaintSquare expects to present a new Learning Center video from the series every two weeks. Future topics in the series include:

  • Adhesion;
  • Concrete Prep and Painting;
  • Film Thickness issues;
  • Holiday Detection;
  • Moisture Testing;
  • Soluble Salts;
  • Steel Surfaces; and
  • Surface Profile and Cleanliness.

The full series will be available free in the PaintSquare Video Learning Center.
