The 46-year-old Jimmie Davis Bridge is due for a new paint job, and the choice of hue has been put to Louisiana's citizens.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LaDOTD) announced its "Pick the Paint" contest Friday (March 7) with a Facebook campaign.

Named for the late James Houston Davis, former governor of Louisiana, the Jimmie Davis Bridge was built in 1968 and will cost an estimated $15 million to $20 million to rehabilitate.

The color options are blue, brown, green, purple, red, orange, gold, and gray.

The Jimmie Davis Bridge is in need of $15 million to $20 million in repairs, including a new paint job.

The 2,822-foot-long bridge carries state highway 511 over the Red River, connecting Shreveport and Bossier City.

Public Weighing In

Voting on Survey Monkey started Friday and will continue through May 2.

As of Wednesday (March 12), purple was in the lead, followed by blue and red, according to LaDOTD.

Pick the Paint

As of Wednesday, purple was in the lead. Voting ends May 2.

Skeptics of choosing a bright color took to the Facebook page to vent their concerns.

"What is the long-term plan for maintaining the color on the bridge?" Brittney Anderson asked.

"If the Jimmie Davis bridge is painted purple (or one of the various other bright colors), is it going to look good in 5, 10, 15 years? Or is it going to look like it does now, but with peeling purple paint?"

Others went further, saying that the bridge should be torn down and completely rebuilt instead.

Fall Bidding

Bids for the project will be accepted starting in October. Work on the bridge is expected to begin in early 2015 and take about one year to complete, during which time the bridge will be completely closed.

The project will involve re-decking, performing structural repairs, installing lighting and painting the bridge. The bridge carries about 21,500 vehicles per day.
