Coatings Get Rad at RadTech

A wide range of coatings industry topics and exhibitors will be on tap at RadTech's three-day conference on ultraviolet and electron beam equipment, raw materials and formulated products.

RadTech 2014, The Global Conference & Expo for UV and EB Curing Technology, will take place May 12-14 at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont, IL.

The event is hosted by RadTech International North America, a nonprofit organization with over 600 members that is dedicated to the educational, technical and scientific advancement of ultraviolet (UV) and electron beam (EB) technologies.

RadTech 2014 will be held in Rosemont, IL, May 12-14. Dozens of technical sessions are planned, and nearly 70 exhibitors will be on hand.

Nearly 70 exhibitors will be at the expo. The exhibit hall will be open for several hours all three days of the show. The current exhibitor list can be viewed here

Technical Sessions

The day before the conference starts, May 11, there will be an undergraduate level professional short course from 1 to 5 .p.m. for UV/EB professional who are employed in the polymer or coatings industry but who have not had an extensive college-level course in polymer chemistry or photopolymerization.

The course is led by Dr. Mike Idacavage, Esstech Inc.; Dr. Susan Bailey, Brewer Science; and Dr. Molly Hladik, Brewer Science. 

Following is a list of technical sessions, organized by day and track, that may be of interest to those in coatings and relevant industries.  

Monday, May 12

  • Adhesives from 8 to 10 a.m. includes "UV-triggered Thermosetting Film Adhesives," by Don Herr, Adhesives Research Inc. 
  • LED Formulation from 10 a.m. to noon includes "A 100% Solids UV LED Curable Coating," by Elena Komarova, Kegel LLC; and "UV-LED Photoinitiators - The Right Tool for the Job," by Dr. Mike Idacavage, PL Industries, a division of Esstech Inc.
  • Metal from 1 to 3 p.m. includes "UV Technology for Protection of Surfaces," by Ben Curatolo, Light Curable Coatings; "Achieving Adhesion to Difficult Metal and Plastic Substrates," by Dr. Mike Idacavage, PL Industries, a division of Esstech Inc.; and "New Amine Modified Polyether Acrylates with High Reactivity," by Paul Share, BASF Corporation.
  • Formulation from 3 to 5 p.m. includes "A Study for Enhancing Through Cure," by Kenton Renkema, Red Spot; "Formulation and Performance Advances in (Meth)acrylate Based Sealants: A Dual Cure Feasibility Study," by Michael Bailey, Sartomer USA LLC; and "Shrinkage of UV Oligomers and Monomers," by Andreas Moeck, RadLab AG.
  • Special Session, Design Enabled by UV + EB Technology from 2 to 4 p.m. includes "The Decorative and Functional Finishing Possibilities with UV-Cured Powder Coating," by Michael Knoblauch, Keyland Polymer; "Opportunities for Functional Design Using Physical Vapor Deposition and UV Curable Coatings," by Jason Eich Red Spot; and "Empowering Design & Product Development with Additive Manufacturing," by Zehavit Reisin, Stratasys.

Tuesday, May 13

  • Bio-engineering from 8 to 10 a.m. includes "Bio-Based Succinic Acid as a Building Block for UV Curable Coatings," by Michael Mang, Myriant Corporation.
  • Bio-based Materials from 10 a.m. to noon includes "Next Generation of UV-curable Cellulose Esters," by Ahmet Nebioglu, Dymax Corporation; "Bio-based Building Blocks for Advanced Photo-cure Coating Systems," by Vijay Mannari, Eastern Michigan University; "High Performance UV-Curable PUDs with High Renewable Carbon Content," by Jeffrey Klang, Sartomer USA; and "Cardanol-based Branched UV-Cured Acrylic Oligomers," by Ren Liu, Jiangnan University.
