Industrial-grade thermal tank insulation from a water-based epoxy is the promise of Carboline Company's new Carbotherm 551.

The coating is designed for multiple uses, from protecting workers from burns on hot surfaces to thermal insulation.

Carboline says Carbotherm 551 "dramatically reduces" the heat of solar radiation on pressure vessels, hydrocarbon storage tanks, and LP tanks.

Carbotherm 551 is designed to protect vessels and workers from the effects of solar radiation.

By reducing skin temperatures, the coating can also help reduce solvent (carbon) emissions from storage tanks, the company says.

Features and Applications

Doug Moore, VP of Global Marketing at Carboline, says Carbotherm 551 provides more durability and a denser film in fewer coats than similar acrylic-based coatings, reducing maintenance coats and improving operating efficiency.

The company says the coating:

  • Can provide up to 60% energy efficiency when applied at 4-6 mm;
  • Can protect against the effects of solar radiation in a single coat;
  • Features a chemical cure that provides chemical resistance; and
  • Resists acid or caustic fumes, splashes and spills, making it appropriate for aggressive industrial applications.
