ORLANDO—Outstanding technical articles on coatings topics from A (application) to Z (zinc) were honored Monday (Feb. 10) with JPCL Editors' Awards as SSPC 2014 opened in Orlando, FL.

"The winning articles, as well as all of those under consideration this year, are authored by some of the best and finest minds in the industry," said JPCL Editor-in-Chief Anita Socci, who presented the awards at SSPC's annual meeting and awards luncheon.

Vaughn O'Dea's Preparing Surfaces at Wastewater Plants was named JPCL's Outstanding Publication.

"JPCL is proud to be the forum to bring these fine articles to the industry."

All but one of the papers were previously published in JPCL; the other was a presentation made at SSPC 2013.

The 2014 JPCL honorees are as follows.

Outstanding Publication

Preparing Surfaces at Wastewater Plants: An Overview of Substrates, Practices and Standards, by Vaughn O'Dea of Tnemec Co., describes how surface preparation for the use of high-performance protective linings contributes to the sustainability of wastewater infrastructure.

In this September 2012 article, O'Dea also discusses surface preparation for common substrates found within severe wastewater environments.

JPCL Editors’ Awards

Self Stratified Inorganic/Organic Nanocomposite Coatings: The Next Leap in Coating Performance, by Drs. Mark D. Soucek, Elif Alyamac and Hua Gu, was a presentation at SSPC 2013.

Cargo Tank Coatings – A Stressful Environment, by Trevor Parry and Bill Woods, identifies some of the stresses that marine cargo tank coatings may face during their service lifetimes, and how these stresses relate to coating failures.

Alan Kehr (top right) and Dennis Graham (bottom right) detailed the basics of FBE application to pipe internals.

Topics include surface preparation; inspecting the incoming, unlined pipe; cleaning and preparing the surface; priming and heating the pipe as needed; applying and curing the FBE; and inspecting the finished lining.

Developments in Zinc Primers for Corrosion Protection  (May 2013), by Pascal Verbiest dr.sc., reviewed the different types of zinc powders and how they are made, types and compositions of zinc primers, suitable uses of these primers, and tips for application.

Developments in Zinc Primers for Corrosion Protection, by Pascal Verbiest dr.sc., reviews the use of zinc-rich primers in protecting the Beijing National Aquatics Center and other steel structures.

Influence of UHP Waterjetting on Shop-Primed Steel in New Construction Part 3  (August 2012), by Philippe Le Calvé, Jean-Pierre Pautasso and Nathalie Le Bozec, describes the final part of a study that involved testing three paint systems over UHP waterjetted panels coated with a zinc-rich shop primer.

Philippe Le Calvé (left), Jean-Pierre Pautasso and Nathalie Le Bozec were honored for Part 3 of their series on UHP waterjetting.

These results were compared to conventional grit blast treated, similarly shop-primed panels.

Other Milestones

JPCL, the voice of SSPC, will mark its 30th anniversary of publication this year with festivities Tuesday (Feb. 11) at Technology Publishing Co.'s Booth 423 at the conference.

The journal is beginning its third decade with its third editor-in-chief: Socci, former managing editor, succeeded longtime editor-in-chief Karen Kapsanis on Jan. 1.

Socci also accepted a special SSPC award presented to Kapsanis for her decades of service to the society's official publication.
