Exhibit and housing space are long gone, and dozens of expert-led sessions are ready to roll, as more than 2,000 industry professionals pour into Orlando, FL, today (Feb. 10) for SSPC 2014 featuring GreenCOAT.

"Registration numbers are running ahead of all previous years since we returned to the SSPC-only show" in 2011, SSPC Director of Marketing Michael Kline reported Friday (Feb. 7).

Exhibit space at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort is sold out, with 243 booths (indoor and outdoor) planned. SSPC staff have been scrambling to add spaces wherever possible to accommodate last-minute exhibitors. Twenty-one new exhibitors will join the show this year.

Registrations may set a record at SSPC 2014. The society returned to its own show in 2011 after the multi-year PACE show partnership with PDCA.

The conference runs through Thursday (Feb. 13).

What's New

This year's show lineup includes a number of firsts, including:

  • Six new early-morning "Technical Mini Sessions" Wednesday and Thursday on topics that include current trends in occupational and environmental health, tank lining selection and application, and coatings opportunities in the gas fracking industry;
  • A new International Spotlight Session on Tuesday that will focus on issues and events affecting coatings professionals in different countries (this year, Canada); and
  • A new After Party sponsored by Jotun on Tuesday night after the exhibit hall closes.

On the Agenda

This year's Technical Program includes 36 sessions featuring 98 speakers, including 12 GreenCOAT speakers in three sessions. An extensive Training Schedule  features two dozen sessions, some of which began over the weekend. A full slate of Committee Meetings is also on tap.

SSPC is scheduled to present its annual Structure Awards today (Feb. 10) at its annual meeting. Last year's winners included preservation work on the (EX) USS Iowa and a robot-assisted wind tower coating project in Denmark.

Today (Feb. 10) will feature SSPC's Annual Meeting and Awards Lunch, where the society will present its 2013 Structure Awards and JPCL will recognize outstanding papers.

From Architecture to Zinc

Throughout the week, the Technical Program will again cover the entire breadth of the paint and coatings industry, with offerings related to protective, marine and architectural coatings for every type of structure.

As always, many of the sessions will focus on health and safety, advances in coatings technology, best practices, leadership, the regulatory and legal climates, and quality-control issues. Durability + Design will sponsor sessions on commercial and architectural coatings.

Sessions on women in the coatings industry have become popular at SSPC shows. Joyce Wright (right), of Newport News Shipbuilding, started the first session in 2011 and is scheduled to present again this year.

The popular sessions for women in the industry are also back on the schedule. Two sessions Wednesday will focus on "Women in Business," and Wednesday afternoon will debut "The Coating Industry Impact Awards Panel" at the popular "Women in Coatings" session.

The entire Daily Schedule is available online, or participants may access a Personal Scheduler to review the schedule and set an itinerary.

Keeping Up

Show information will be updated continually on PaintSquare's Guide to SSPC 2014. A news ticker on the page will keep participants updated on show and industry happenings throughout the week.
