SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings will offer more assistance to North American college students in the next academic year, the organization has announced.

The society will increase the number of college scholarships it offers to six from four. The SSPC Board of Governors unanimously endorsed increasing the program's funding to add two scholarships.

U of Akron Corrosion Engineering
University of Akron

The University of Akron calls corrosion engineering "one of the fastest-growing industries." UA's Corrosion Engineering program is the first of its kind in the U.S.

"When the scholarship program was brought up for continued funding, the entire Board agreed that this is one of the best programs we have to get young people interested in SSPC and their possible future careers in corrosion and the use of coatings to mitigate that problem," said SSPC President Ben Fultz.

Applications and Eligibility

College students may apply for one of six $2,500 scholarships beginning this month (January 2014).

Any student who is beginning or continuing his or her education at an institution of higher learning in the U.S. or Canada may apply.

The application may be downloaded here.

Additional Requirements

Candidates must be high school seniors planning to enroll full time or already enrolled full time at an accredited institution of higher learning that offers a three- or four-year curriculum.

SSPC offers six scholarships for students pursuing three- or four-year higher education programs. The University of Akron's program bachelor of science program is a corrosion-specific core on a science and engineering base.

Applicants must also be a member of SSPC in good standing, or the child or grandchild of an SSPC member in good standing.

In addition to the application, candidates must submit two letters of recommendation, high school or college transcripts, and a personal lettter expressing why they deserve the scholarship and what they plan to do in their field of study.

A panel of three SSPC board members designated by the entire board will choose the recipients.
