A colorful, new water tank in Mt. Vernon, IL, has beat out more than 200 competitors to win Tnemec's 2013 Tank of the Year.

The tank features the town's new tagline, "Creativity Redefined," which is also being used for local marketing and promotional materials throughout Mt. Vernon.

The Tank of the Year competition started in 2006. All of the tanks feature Tnemec coatings and coating systems. Nominations were accepted from the beginning of the year until October.

Tnemec 2013 Tank of the Year

"The Tenemec water tower award is a great honor for a community of this size," said Mary Jane Chesley, mayor of Mt. Vernon, IL, home of the winning tank.

This year, for the first time, Tnemec allowed a public vote to narrow down the finalists. More than 200 tank nominations were submitted, and more than 10,000 votes were cast, eventually narrowing it down to the top 12 tanks. A panel of water tank enthusiasts chose from the 12 tanks to crown the 2013 Tank of the Year.

Symbol of Efficient Planning

The Mt. Vernon tank, which received 759 votes from the public, features a "vivid, wrap-around motif." The spheroid-style tank represents the "reinvention of a proud local community."

"The City of Mt. Vernon knew they wanted to adorn the tank with their new brand," said Mike Cerutti of Coating Solutions. "But they went back and forth on the exact design until they found the perfect one."

Multi-colored circles and spirals painted against a white backdrop help the tank stand out from its surrounding landscape.

"They submitted the colors, and we provided them with options in every shade. They ended up using two gallons of seven different colors for the logo and design," Cerutti said.

The mayor of the 15,277-person town, Mary Jane Chesley, said, "The Tenemec water tower award is a great honor for a community of this size," adding that it symbolizes what efficient planning and teamwork can accomplish.

All of the tank's interior and exterior plated steel was shop-primed with Series 91-H2O Hydro-Zinc, a zinc-rich urethane.

Once the tank was erected, the interior received two coats of Series N140 Pota-Pox Plus, an epoxy coating for potable water tanks. The exterior received an intermediate coat of Series 73 Endura-Shield, an aliphatic acrylic polyurethane, and a finish coat of Series V700 Low VOC HydroFlon, an advanced thermoset solution fluoropolymer.

The swirl design was applied using several colors of HydroFlon.

Tnemec showcases the 12 finalists of the 2013 Tank of the Year contest in this YouTube video.

"Series V700 was chosen as the finish coat because of its long-term color and gloss retention and they wanted the tank to look outstanding for years to come," Cerutti said. "This products meets area VOC regulations and provides extremely long-term maintenance cycles."

HMG Engineers of Carlyle, IL, provided the tank's engineering design; CB&I, located in Chicago, IL, constructed the tank; Ridgeway, IA-based Viking Industrial Painting was the field applicator of tank's coatings; and Trikote LLC of Pacific, MO, applied the logo.
