Blast equipment maker Guyson Corp. of U.S.A. is staking a new claim in the wet-blast field with the acquisition of Automated Blasting Systems Inc. of Windsor, CT, the companies have announced.

Guyson, founded in 1975, is part of UK-based Guyson International, a family-owned company founded in 1938 that is the largest independent manufacturer of blast finishing and aqueous degreasing equipment in Europe.

ABS is a custom manufacturer of automated, semi-automated and manual wet blasting systems.

The acquisition brings ABS's extensive wet-blasting technology into Guyson's portfolio. ABS specializes in custom automated, semi-automated, and manual wet blasting system manufacturing.

Making the Move

All of ABS's work-in-process machines, spare-parts inventories, laboratory testing equipment, design engineering assets, intellectual property and customer files are being relocated to Guyson's headquarters in Saratoga Springs, NY.

In addition, ABS Vice President and General Manager Richard Gillott has joined Guyson.

“We are excited about this significant expansion of our equipment offerings and the added growth potential of wet-blasting technology," Guyson Corp. President Steve Byrnes said in an announcement Nov. 6.

Guyson Corp.'s capabilities include advanced robot programming of custom blast equipment.

Besides sharing many of the same customers, the companies "share many of the same goals and are dedicated to providing leading-edge robotic and automated systems to customers around the world," Byrnes said.

About ABS and Wet Blasting

ABS has been a supplier of wet-blast machines to the aerospace, automotive, cutting tool, electronics, metal working and other industries since 1988. The company was formed as a result of purchasing the Vaqua product line from The Spadone Machine Co., which made the slurry-blast equipment for more than 40 years.

According to ABS, wet blasting predates the U.S. Civil War when lamp makers used it to stencil glass chimneys for oil lamps. The lamp makers "realized a finer etch and extended stencil life using a wet blast," according to ABS's website.

The smoother surface finish became more valuable in increasing the power and efficiency of the turbine engine in the 1930s and 1940s, the company said. Today, the technology serves a wide variety of industries.
