DuPont has introduced what it calls the first “truly water-based,” low-VOC protective coating with a corrosion resistance of up to 3,000 salt spray hours.

Engineered for off-shore, chemical processing, and water treatment fasteners, the new coating is targeted toward applications requiring extreme corrosion resistance, anti-galling, and dry lubrication.

Testing showed continued corrosion resistance after 3,000 salt spray hours (right). The coating is available in red and blue.

The coating is distributed by Intech Services, of Newark, DE, the sole distributor of DuPont's Teflon industrial coatings in North America.

The coating reflect's DuPont's commitment to providing "environmentally friendly coating systems that combat the most corrosive environments," according to Intech.

Salt Spray Testing

Third-party salt spray tests showed "excellent corrosion resistance even without surface pretreatment, though the corrosion resistance can be enhanced if used with recommended primers and substrate pretreatments," Intech said.

"Fasteners with a zinc base coat of .3 mils easily passed ASTM testing of less than 10 percent red rust at 3,000 salt spray hours."

The coating is recommended for offshore and chemical applications, with or without pretreatments.

Corrosion resistance can also be achieved without pretreatments on aluminum steel and stainless steel substrates, Intech said. The coatings also offer chemical resistance and water clean-up and can be applied to thicknesses of 1-4.5 mils.

Curing temperatures of 450°F improve the process with less bake time and energy required.

The coatings are available in colors, including blue and red; yellow and black will be added in the near future, the company said.
