Color-Changing Car Paint is Hot

More items for Coating Application

A viral video of a car coating that changes color in hot water, à la Hot Wheels Color Shifters, has garnered 2.7 million views and sent people worldwide lining up to try it.

The car, a Nissan Skyline R33, was painted over with a heat-sensitive coating that changes color. It was developed by Auto Kandy, a body shop in the United Kingdom.

On this car, the paint changes from orange to black when hot water is poured on it, but the body shop says it can make the effect work with any color combination.

Watch this Nissan Skyline, painted by Auto Kandy, shift colors under hot water.

The video has been such a hit that the company says it's having difficulty keeping up with orders pouring in from all over the world.

The reactive paint is sold for £199.99 ($319.44 USD) per liter, with colors other than black subject to a five-liter minimum order. The coating is available in solvent- or water-borne formulas but only has a shelf life of four months and will eventually lose some of its color-changing properties from sun exposure.

For the Nissan Skyline, Auto Kandy used between six and 7.5 liters of the paint, applying it in "many light coats."

Love it or hate it, there are definitely worse custom car paint jobs out there.
