Protective and marine coatings maker Hempel has introduced Hempaguard, a line of two new hull coatings designed to resist fouling during idle periods and improve fuel efficiency.

The coatings use the company's newly patented ActiGuard technology, based on silicone-hydrogel and biocide science. The technology was developed over five years and tested in sea trials and extended idling periods.

Testing of the Hempaguard products has shown average fuel savings of six percent and fouling resistance during idle periods up to 120 days, according to Hempel.

Hempaguard tests have shown fouling resistance of up to 120 days during idle periods, as well as average fuel savings of six percent, according to Hempel.

2 Products

Launched Monday (Sept. 9) during London International Shipping Week, the products are available as Hempaguard X5 and Hempaguard X7.

Hempaguard X5 is formulated for 36-month docking intervals for any type of vessel with any trading pattern and offers fouling resistance for up to 60 idle days, Hempel says.

Hempaguard X7 offers a docking interval of 90 months with a guaranteed fouling resistance of up to 120 idle days. For vessels complying with the full specification for Hempaguard X7, Hempel is offering a performance satisfaction guarantee contract.

Hempel is offering a no-questions-asked, money-back performance satisfaction contract guarantee on vessels complying with the full specification for the company's new Hempaguard X7.

“If for any reason you are not satisfied using Hempaguard X7, Hempel will pay, under the performance satisfaction guarantee contract, for the conversion of Hempaguard back to conventional antifouling and with no questions asked,” said Fouling Control Marketing Manager Claes Skat-Rørdam.

About ActiGuard

According to Hempel, ActiGuard integrates silicone-hydrogel and full diffusion control of biocides in a single coating. Surface retention of the biocide activates the hydrogel, which effectively holds fouling organisms at bay, cutting friction to a minimum while using a minimum amount of biocide, said Hempel.

The Hempaguard products require one coat and eliminate the need for polishing, as the biocide is retained on the surface, Hempel says. It says Hempaguard releases 95 percent less biocide than a standard self-polishing co-polymer antifouling.

The products are designed for use in all waters, according to a Hempel video release.
