A white paper on how and why highway bridges corrode, along with solutions for low-cost control methods, is now available for free download from NACE International.

"Corrosion Control Plan for Bridges" provides an overview of corrosion, including an introduction to the process of corrosion, its causes, environmental factors and the types of corrosion that cause bridge damage.

Corrosion Control Methods

The 34-page paper discusses low-cost corrosion control measures to implement during the initial construction phase to produce low-maintenance bridges with service lives of 75 to 100 years, according to NACE.

According to NACE, there are about 603,310 bridges in the U.S. This map, from December 2011, shows the number of structurally deficient bridges by state.

Corrosion control measures covered in the paper include protective coatings for structural steel elements, weathering steels, stainless steel reinforcement, high-performance concrete and electrochemical techniques.

The paper also covers types of bridge designs, structural elements and incorporated materials.

According to NACE, there are about 603,310 bridges in the United States, most of which were designed for a 50-year service life and built with lower design standards than those used today. As these bridges reach the end of their lifespans, state highway departments are faced with repairing and maintaining the bridges beyond their original design lives.
