Coating maker Hempel has gained a patent for its two-coat, low-solvent protective paint system for refineries, the chemical industry, power generation, infrastructure projects and wind turbines.

Hempel says the Ultra-High Solids and Speed (UHSS) system is suitable for paint shop application of steel parts for those industries. The system coatings are Hempadur Zinc 17310 and Hemparea Enamel 55980.

Hempel filed for for its “Novel fast-curing ultra-high-solids low-VOC coating system for aggressive corrosive environments” in May 2009.

Hempel UHSS Coatings

The system is designed for interior and exterior steel surfaces in the refinery, chemical, power generation, infrastructure and wind turbine industries.

The manufacturer says that standard similar systems use three coats, but its system uses “two high-solids coatings to deliver a primer and galvanic and UV protection.”

As a result, Hempel says, the system “can reduce VOC emissions by up to 70 percent,” compared to standard three-coat systems, and dries more quickly than three-coat systems.

Features and Specs

According to Hempel, the system:

  • Complies with C5-M (very high – marine) and C4 (high corrosivity) categories under the ISO 12944 corrosion standard;
  • Produces 396.4 kg of VOCs per 10,000m² (compared to 1373.45 kg for a typical standard three-coat system); and
  • Dries in 3.5 hours.

Patent EP 2 283 056 B1, announced Nov. 9, was granted by the European Patent Office. Hempel is based in Denmark. The UHSS system is available globally.

“We developed UHSS for manufacturers who want to increase production output without increasing VOC emissions,” says Anders Voldsgaard Clausen, Group Segment Marketing Manager at Hempel.
