Five students studying coatings and polymeric materials have been awarded scholarships as part of two new programs announced by North Dakota State University and the Valspar Corporation.

The Valspar Foundation, a philanthropic branch of the global coatings manufacturer, will contribute $20,000 to support up to five graduate student scholarships, as well as a new program for Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE).

Valspar NDSU scholarship

Five graduate students in NDSU's Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials were awarded $3,000 scholarships as part of Valspar and NDSU's two new scholarship programs. The first winners are (left to right) Adlina Paramarta, Casey Orgon, Olena Kudina, Alison Rohly and Andriy Popadyuk.

Fargo, ND-based NDSU will administer the scholarships through its 108-year-old Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials and coordinate them through NDSU's Development Foundation.

First Scholarship Winners

A selection committee of NDSU faculty and Valspar's technical leaders announced the first Valspar Graduate Scholars Program awards to:

  • Olena Kudina of Lviv, Ukraine;
  • Casey Orgon of Bemidji, MN;
  • Adlina Paramarta of Java, Indonesia;
  • Andriy Popadyuk of Lviv, Ukraine; and
  • Alison Rohly of Lino Lakes, MN.

Each graduate student will receive $3,000 for the 2013-14 academic year.

"These scholarships will further our relationship and build our pipeline of talent by supporting students to develop insights into fundamental performance drivers of coatings and polymers and provide them an experience associated with an industrial environment," said Cynthia Arnold, Valspar senior vice president and chief technology officer.

"Valspar and NDSU have a long history of technical collaboration. We recognize their deep technical expertise in many disciplines associated with coatings research," Arnold said.

Dean Webster, chair of the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials, said, "We appreciate Valspar's generous support and commitment to promote applied science and education in the fields of coatings and polymers. Their contribution and engagement will allow us to provide more academic and career development opportunities for outstanding undergraduate and graduate students.

"It is planned that the scholars will visit Valspar during the spring semester to discuss their research projects and to find out more about Valspar and the coatings industry."
