Are You Smarter Than?

Four college sophomores were taking organic chemistry. Each had an A going into the final exam.

The friends were so confident about their chemistry grades that they decided to attend a party at a nearby college the weekend before the exam, instead of staying home and studying. After partying hard all night Saturday, they slept through Sunday and didn’t make it back to until early Monday morning.

Fearing how they’d do on the exam, they opted to skip the exam and tell the prof that they had had a flat tire on the way home, didn’t have a spare, and couldn’t get help for quite some time. The students were relieved when the professor agreed to let them make up the test the next day.

He placed them in separate rooms, handed each of them a test booklet, and told them to begin. Each looked at the first problem, worth 5 points. It was something simple about free radical formation. “Cool,” each thought in his separate room. “This is going to be easy.” Each finished the problem and then turned the page.

On the second page was written: “For 95 points: Which tire?”
