A Woman’s Place

Years before the Afghan conflict, journalist Barbara Walters did a story on gender roles in Afghanistan.
In it, she noted that women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands.
After the repressive Taliban regime was overthrown, Walters returned to the country to do a follow-up.
To her surprise, she saw that women continued to follow the men.
“Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?” she asked one woman.
Without hesitation, the woman replied, “Land mines.”
